Just about every church organizations in the current day is looking for ways to save money by completing audio, video, and lighting projects using in-house volunteers. I applaud this effort, as it is an attempt at good stewardship.
Unfortunately, it rarely produces the intended results. But that’s not because the idea is bad – it’s an excellent idea – we just need to tweak the execution a little bit…
A consultant has the benefit of experience with many organizations, and relationships with manufacturers of technology solutions that may not even be available to the general public. I play the role of consultant for many of the organizations that I support – and I help them set and maintain the technology vision for the infrastructure. I help the staff and volunteers to become “super-users” and I simply provide them the tools to do what they need to do to make church happen.
With a consultant, you may in fact pay more for the tool, and less over time for the life of the project (but often cost is the same, or less, with my model.) With the advent of the internet, it’s changed our world dramatically. It’s extremely easy to get a price for, say, a wireless microphone. But the price is not for the “project” of setting up wireless microphones; it’s just the price of having “A” wireless microphone shipped to your door. A consultant will make sure that you have the components to securely and safely install the wireless microphone, avoiding interference from other wireless-capable devices in your facility, properly rack-mounting the device, etc. The internet does not give you this full cost – and implementing the solution without the appropriate components and thought to make it functional, reliable, and protected from abuse will, without any doubt, cost you more in the long run – in both money, reliability, and time. Now imagine applying this same problem to something a bit more complicated, such as an LED wall – see what I mean?
